1959 outside late afternoon at Hugoland Factory, Lunawatte, Welimada , UVA . We were just starting to tarmac surface the Estate road and had hired an elephant each morning to pull a heavy roller. He worked till midday ...stopped and spent wisely all afternoon cooling off in the river. Mr Ponnambalam the H.L Head Teamaker sitting with Janet aged 3. My new Morris tourer by side. Later we invested in a vibrating roller more efficient but totally without the charm and ambience of this wise creature who knew exactly when to knock off and cool down.
