  • Udappuwa festival. The village, men and women, gather at the Mariamman Kovil in the north of the village. Here they bathe at the well, fall into a deep trance, dance kavadi, then they will move south to the main Vishnu Kovil, stopping at the small beach Kataragama shrine on the way...The trance is very strong, they often have to be restrained by family & friends, screaming as this is done.

  • Sri Lanka. Earlier that afternoon, Duryodhan will be walked around the precinct of the temple, surrounded by the village people shouting out ?Govinda Govinda? In a deep trance after his battle with Bhima, he is finally brought out of his trance inside the temple.

  • The Four Guardians arrive at the front of the main Vishnu Kovil. The fire walking will take place here the next day. Each is given charge of a corner. They dance to Sinhalese drummers. Each finally falls at his respective corner, his jasmine bangle whipped off, and then carried off into the temple.

  • The head priest of the Vishnu temple at Udappuwa. A Brahmin from South India, married to a Brahmin born in Sri Lanka. A happy & confident man, he speaks fluent Sinhalese and English in addition to his mother tongue, Tamil.

  • The four men walk towards the Mariamman Kovil after being bathed and dressed at the well in the temple grounds. They will play the role of the four guardians of the fire walking pit. They become Vairawar, Badrakali, Aiyannar, Veerapattharar...They are blessed, each given their role, & they first dance in front of and around the Mariamman Kovil. They will dance from there to the main Vishnu Kovil in the centre of the village. Along the route, they will stop briefly at a small Kataragama Devale on the beach, and next at the Kali Kovil.

This man sits on a wall in the temple, while others in the procession are dressed in costume and have their make up applied.They will go to the main Vishnu kovil in the north of the village.

  • Sri Lanka. Womens festival at Udappuwa. The first festival after the Sinhala Tamil New year, in the hot month of April or May. They dance in groups around a shrine at night and the next morning. On the Wednesday* morning, they all converge on the beach, carrying with them pots with seedlings and end the celebration with an offering to the sea. An adaptation of a harvest & rain festival, at this fishing community the prayer is for a better catch from the sea. .*The festival is always on a Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.<br />
