His earliest travel books were about the Middle East, but these were followed by some of his most celebrated works: Among the Russians, which describes a lone journey by car through the old Soviet Union; Behind the Wall (on China), winner of the Hawthornden Prize and Thomas Cook Travel Award; The Lost Heart of Asia, on the newly independent nations of Central Asia; In Siberia and most recently, Shadow of the Silk Road. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages.
