• "In Sri Lanka too we have a popular form of drama on the death and resurrection of Christ known in Sinhala as "Pasku", performed on Good Friday in some Catholic churches along the Western coastal. The history of passion shows go back to the Portuguese period. The Pitipana Passion Play was performed once in three years when the outstanding statue of Christ was taken for the passion show at St. Peter’s Church, Negombo. It was enacted with traditional sermons, Pasan and Lathoni in the permanent Pasku shed in front of the church". - W. T. A. Leslie Fernando. The Island.
Another photo of "The Comrades" [The DBU Youth Group], which was probably also taken between 1925 and 1930, but about a year or two after the previous photo. It illustrates the expansion in the membership of the Group.
• Luckyland Bungalow, Udapussellawa 1961 pruned tea behind. The Bungalow was originally built by the original pioneer Fred Whittall who was working next door at Gampaha as he disliked the heat of Colombo with Whittall's Agency of which he was a family member. My Father who had learnt tea planting with him from I908 , eventually took charge in 1920. As a child I grew up there finally ending the last 3 1/2 years in charge. The Bungalow was built in the grand manner. It had a central corridor 120 feet long x about 9 feet wide down which a children We would ride our bikes! Off this corridor were 5 Ensuite bathrooms, dining room, sitting and morning room plus two huge verandas for plants, orchids etc. The view was spectacular stretching across to Haputale, the Horton Plains dominated by I think the second highest peak of Totagalla.
A nice anecdote of my Mother shortly after arriving and she was getting to grips learning Tamil. One afternoon she asked the house servant to bring her a bath in the bedroom .There was no running water and it had to be prepared with a hip bath and a series of jugs of warm water. Imagine her amazement a while later at the sound of of horses hoofs clopping down the corridor to the bedroom! There was my Fathers horse fully saddled and stirruped being lead in to the room . It turned out that she had misused and muddled the Tamil word for a bath "kuthuli " for a horse " kuthuri" ! Lady asked for a horse and it's not for us to question the kinky wants of the English bosses wife!
