• Jeyajothy, 50, Sri Lanka
Mental illness can force people out of work and drive them into poverty. BasicNeeds works in eight developing countries to address mental illness and poverty to enable people to achieve a sustainable recovery and campaigns to change attitudes towards mental illness.
BasicNeeds also work with people with epilepsy. While medically epilepsy is not a mental illness, in the countries where BasicNeeds work, people with epilepsy are often directed to psychiatric services, and face the same problems of poverty and stigma as those with mental illness.
In 2005 the Fund gave BasicNeeds a grant to improve mental health care for people living in communities affected by the long civil war between the LTTE (Tamil Tigers) and the government of Sri Lanka. Through the project people with mental health problems were given access to treatment and village volunteers were trained to support people socially and economically. The project was run in partnership with the Eastern Self-Reliant Community Organisation (ESCO).
Jeyajothy is a mother of eight and lives with her husband and two youngest daughters in Vaharai in the eastern province of Batticaloa, an area badly affected during the conflict. Jeyajothy suffers from depression and epilepsy, which were exacerbated by traumatic experiences during the war.
