I think most of the staff worked on Torrington Estate and helped out on Iona. I recognise my Father’s head Clerk back row second from the right and I think the Tea Maker is on the far right.

  • Botanic garden at Hakgala is the second largest gardens in Sri Lanka. The main reason to establish the garden at Hakgala was cultivation and promotion of Cinchona. Medicinal use..The medicinally active bark, which is stripped from the tree, dried and powdered, includes other alkaloids that are closely related to quinine but react differently in treating malaria. As a medicinal herb, cinchona bark is also known as Jesuit's bark or Peruvian bark.....The garden was established in 1861 with the auspices of Mr G.H.W. Thawaites then director of Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya and M.R. W. MacNichholl was the pioneer curator of the gardens

  • Luckyland Bungalow, Udapussellawa 1961 pruned tea behind. The Bungalow was originally built by the original pioneer Fred Whittall who was working next door at Gampaha as he disliked the heat of Colombo with Whittall's Agency of which he was a family member. My Father who had learnt tea planting with him from I908 , eventually took charge in 1920. As a child I grew up there finally ending the last 3 1/2 years in charge. The Bungalow was built in the grand manner. It had a central corridor 120 feet long x about 9 feet wide down which a children We would ride our bikes! Off this corridor were 5 Ensuite bathrooms, dining room, sitting and morning room plus two huge verandas for plants, orchids etc. The view was spectacular stretching across to Haputale, the Horton Plains dominated by I think the second highest peak of Totagalla.<br />
A nice anecdote of my Mother shortly after arriving and she was getting to grips learning Tamil. One afternoon she asked the house servant to bring her a bath in the bedroom .There was no running water and it had to be prepared with a hip bath and a series of jugs of warm water. Imagine her amazement a while later at the sound of of horses hoofs clopping down the corridor to the bedroom! There was my Fathers horse fully saddled and stirruped being lead in to the room . It turned out that she had misused and muddled the Tamil word for a bath "kuthuli " for a horse " kuthuri" ! Lady asked for a horse and it's not for us to question the kinky wants of the English bosses wife!
